Autologous Conditioned Plasma

Blood mainly consists of a liquid called plasma, and contains red blood cells, white blood cells, and growth factors. Growth factors are commonly used by medical professionals to heal injuries. Autologous Conditioned Plasma (ACP) is plasma that contains more growth factors than what is typically found in your blood. A high concentration of growth factors can be 5-10 times richer than normal plasma. In order to develop and prepare ACP, we will draw a small amount of your blood. Using the centrifuge at our practice, we will separate growth factors from other blood cells to increase their concentration. The increased concentration of growth factors is then combined with the remaining blood.

How ACP Hair Restoration Works

Although the science behind ACP is unclear, studies show that the increased concentration of growth factors in ACP can speed up the healing process. ACP is used to treat tendonitis and can improve healing after surgery, as it accelerates tissue regeneration and new cellular growth. For hair restoration, ACP can be injected into the scalp in order to stimulate inactive hair follicles into active growth.

When you come in for the procedure, your scalp will be given an anesthesia block to ensure that you don’t feel any pain or discomfort. A small amount of blood will be drawn, in the same way that routine blood samples are taken in a lab. We will then prepare the ACP by centrifuging your blood sample. The centrifuge machine has a rapidly rotating container that uses centrifugal force to separate the growth factors.

Patients results can be enhanced with our clinical staff’s recommendations, which can include topical and oral prescriptions tailored to each individual’s specific needs. These specialized treatments set us apart by providing a customized approach to treating hair loss and restoration.

Recovering from ACP hair restoration at SF Bay Area Plastic Surgery

Your scalp may be tender for up to 24 hours after the procedure. We recommend one treatment per month for up to three months for optimal results. Long-lasting results can be maintained with follow-up treatments every 6 to 12 months.

Patients usually see improvements in hair thickness, texture, and growth within a few weeks after treatment. It can take several months to see measurable results. We recommend 2-3 treatments, spaced 4 weeks apart, for best results. You will need maintenance treatments every 1-2 years to maintain the results of your hair restoration treatment. No procedure can change your genetic predisposition for hair loss, so subsequent sessions are strongly encouraged.
